Topic: A Stunning Miracle

Text: JOHN 11:33-40Key Verse:
"Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days" (John 11:39).
Some years ago, the notion that it was physically impossible for a human being to run a mile in four minutes was widely held. Our bone structure was all wrong, the wind resistance was too great, and our lung power was inadequate. There appeared to be a hundred and one reasons why it could not be done! Then one day (May 6th 1954), a twenty-five year old Englishman called Roger Bannister proved that the doctors, the trainers, and the athletes themselves were all wrong. And to the unbelief of everybody, Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile. Of all the miracles Jesus did, the raising of Lazarus in our text ranks as the most astonishing to the people of his time. Traditional Jewish belief had it that the soul of a dead person somehow remains with the body for three days. After three days, the soul departs finally from the body never to return, and that is when corruption sets in. When Martha objected to the opening of the tomb because Lazarus had been dead four days, she was expressing the common view that this is now a hopeless situation. But Christ, by miracle, brought Lazarus back to life. Hope means hoping when things are hopeless, knowing that our breakthrough is not tied to the status of our situation. Our breakthrough is tied to the status of our Faith! Jesus' reply was tied to Martha's faith, not Lazarus' body. So, no matter where you are and no matter what situation you find yourself today, God can still bless you. Your situation is not too hard for God. Only those who give up loose the race. Hang your faith on Christ until the final moment. Never, never give up.
