Text: Mark 7:24-30

Key Verse: "And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter" (Mark 7:29).

The African impala can jump to a height of over 10 feet and cover a distance of greater than 30 feet. Yet, these magnificent creatures can be kept in an enclosure in any zoo with a 3-foot wall. The animals will not jump if they cannot see where their feet will fall. Faith is the ability to trust what we cannot see, and with it, we are freed from the flimsy enclosures of life that only fear allows to entrap us.
The Syrophenician miracle is an outstanding lesson on faith. This woman, a Gentile, came to Jesus while He was in Tyre. At first, she begs for her daughter to be healed to the point of annoying the disciples who ask Jesus to send her away. When Christ saw that she was steadfast in her faith and persevered in her determination to get her miracle, He granted her request. There are many barriers (racial, social, cultural, and spiritual) which confronted this Gentile woman. Everyone who comes to believe in Jesus and obey Him must overcome the obstacles to that faith and obedience. Some people have to struggle against the objections and arguments of friends and family. Others struggle because they see inconsistencies in the lives of Christians they know.

Little faith becomes great faith as it persistently overcomes the obstacles that it encounters. This Gentile woman had no resentment or bitterness, but was willing to accept Jesus' help on any terms He might present. She knew Jesus was her only hope. She agreed with Peter who had already voiced, "Lord, to whom shall we go?" (John 6:68). Why not take a cue from this virtuous Gentile, develop and manifest the kind of wholesome faith that heaven can never deny.

Thought for the day: A leap of faith into the arms of Jesus is a sure lift to eternal habitation
