Governor Seraki Dickson |
Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson has approved a 30 percent slash in the salaries of political appointees in the State to enable the government to meet its financial obligations.
In a statement issued on Friday, the State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Jonathan Obuebite, said the decision was made as a sacrifice by political appointees to allow the State to meet its obligations.
“All permanent secretaries, executives of parastatals, headmasters and principals will henceforth prepare payment vouchers for payment of salaries and they will be held responsible for any irregularities,” he said.
The policy will take effect on Monday, May 16, according to Mr. Obuebite.
He added that pensioners in the State would be paid immediately after the constitution of the Pensions Board, which is tasked with facilitating the payment of pensions, is finalized.
The State Executive Council also resolved to establish farms in each of the State’s Local Government Areas (LGAs) in an effort to stimulate the economy and create job opportunities for unemployed youth.
