Monday May 16, 2016Text: Amos 3:9-15
Key Verse:"Hear ye, and testify in the house of Jacob, saith the Lord GOD, the God of hosts, That in the day that I shall visit the transgressions of Israel upon him I will also visit the altars of Bethel: and the horns of the altar shall be cut off, and fall to the ground" (Amos 3:13, 14).
Other Devotional by Pastor W.F Kumuyi
He called it robbing minds together as he poured out his heart to the man who sat next to him in the public bus. "It is about my first son, truly I have become fed up. He is neither intelligent in school nor domestically useful at home.
He is a member of the cult. I have done everything humanly possible, including bringing in the police but to no avail", Mr. Abel lamented. His listener who perhaps had his load of challenge merely retorted, "Sir report him to the minister of youth and culture as he has failed to listen to you". God was about to judge Israel but would not do so without sending a prophet/messenger to warn them.
In our text, prophet Amos pictured Assyria and Egypt, its most wicked neighbors coming to witness Israel's sins and God's judgment. This was to let them see the enormity, gravity and extremity of Israel's wickedness. Assyria was to become an instrument of chastisement against Israel, whose altars had become so polluted that they offered no more acceptable worship. Israel took God's love and protection for granted.
Their leaders and nobles had robbed their defenceless citizens and would now be rendered defenceless by the invading Assyrians. Prophet Amos warned them against a late attempt to repent as such would be unacceptable to God. Israel could not have genuine fellowship with God without an acceptance of His word with prompt and consistent obedience of His commandment.
They failed to do this and were scattered to other foreign countries as refuges. The question comes to us today. Can we walk in true fellowship with God without accepting His word as fundamental truth and abiding by them? The answer is a definite ‘No'.
