Topic: Our Light Affliction

Text: 2 Corinthians 4:7-18
Key Verse: "For our light affliction which is but for moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory" (2 Corinthians 4:17).
He sat in a corner of the staffroom, his face a picture of despondency. "John, why are you looking so gloomy or is the world coming to an end anytime from now as you always tell us?" A colleague had asked him. For a few seconds no answer came. When he answered, it was with such disdain for his new faith. "I don't know why things are so hard for me since I became a Christian, every road I take seems to lead nowhere".
Like the young man in the story above, many believers in the Corinthian church started facing some physical challenges as a result of their newly found faith. Paul the apostle had to encourage them not to lose heart, giving the assurance that God is able to see them through, no matter what. Afflictions are appointed for us by our heavenly Father.
However, there is a provision of support in the covenant of grace for true Christians who are suffering; for by these they are conformed the more to Him. When the suffering saint is supported by the arm of the Lord, indulged with His presence and favoured with the discoveries of His love, whatever he may be going through will compare to nothing he will get on the day of reward. So, cheer up, for the Lord will surely succour you.
Thought for the day: Religious profession without Christ is vain.
